Housing choice in the Redlands workshop

15th April 2009

What sort of housing is right for you and your children into the future? Will it be available? How much will it cost?

In 2006, the population of Redland City was 131,210. In 2030 that figure is estimated to be around 180,000.

The state government’s draft South East Queensland Regional Plan 2009 – 2031 requires Redland City to accommodate an additional 19,500 new dwellings by 2031 to cope with the increase. How will this be achieved?

Redlands’ Mayor Melva Hobson is urging residents to be involved in community discussions on housing and infrastructure.

“An increase in population, low rental vacancy and changing household structure will affect housing choice,” Cr Hobson said.

Real Estate Prices Set To Boom

“In June 2008, the median house price in the Redlands was $450,000. What will the median price be in 2030? And what kind of home will $450,000 buy you in 10 or 20 years’ time?

“Projections for the area suggest that our population will be considerably older and made up of smaller households with only one or two persons per dwelling. All this points to a need for a major change in the form and diversity of our housing,” Cr Hobson said.

“We would like to explore all options and make decisions based on feedback from the community. “

As part of Redlands 2030 community engagement process, Council invites you to join in an open conversation about housing choice in the Redlands.

Guest speakers Mike Myers, Executive Director of Queensland Community Housing, and Dr. George Earl from Bond University’s School of Sustainable Development, will lead discussions about long-term options for housing in the Redlands.
