SMBI transport discussed with new Translink CEO

20th April 2009

Integrated transport for the Southern Moreton Bay Islands was among key topics discussed when Redlands Mayor Melva Hobson and CEO Gary Stevenson met with new Translink CEO Peter Strachan earlier this month.

Mr Strachan visited the Redlands as part of his tour of all Translink routes, and took the time to discuss local public transport issues with the Mayor and CEO.

His tour included visits to the Cleveland Train Station and Weinam Creek passenger ferry terminal.

Cr Hobson described the meeting as a “breath of fresh air”, with Mr Strachan committing to investigating how transport to the Redlands’ islands could be better integrated with Translink.

“Mr Strachan recognises we have a unique situation in the Redlands when it comes to North Stradbroke Island, Coochiemudlo Island and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands,” she said.

“Nowhere else in Australia is there such a significant resident island population dependant on sea transport. All other island communities around Australia are either tourism-based, or far enough off the coastline to be self-contained communities.

“Mr Strachan has indicated he is willing to look at the long term opportunities for our island transport network to come under the Translink network, which could then provide greater integration and connectivity to a larger public transport system.

“We realise this is no guarantee of change, but we certainly appreciated Mr Strachan taking the time to meet with us, and being willing to investigate what solutions may be available to improve marine-based public transport in the Redlands.”
