MBCIA Proposes New Barge Route to Russell Island
Weinam Creek at Redland Bay has always been the transport hub for the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI). As the population of the islands have increased, successive Councils have failed to provide adequate parking facilities for the island residents.
As island residents are faced with rising parking demand, the Redland City Council have implemented a redevelopment proposal that will change the focus of Weinam Creek from serving the transport needs of the island community to a mixed development catering for mainland residents.
This dramatic shift in focus does not serve the needs of the islands and we are now faced to negotiate alternatives with a Council that many island residents view as being hostile and unreasonable when dealing with island issues.
Many individuals and organisations on the islands are taking action in varying ways to deal with the Weinam Creek redevelopment. The MBCIA supports the rights of all members of our community to petition and lobby the Council for outcomes that they consider appropriate.
The MBCIA has proposed to Council that a new barge route from Rocky Point Russell Island to the mainland and a new barge route from north Macleay Island to Victoria Point be considered. To compliment the fast barges, we also propose an inter-island bus service that also uses the barges for mainland connections.
