Plan for Kennedy’s Farm Precinct takes shape

21 July 2010

Southern Moreton Bay Island (SMBI) residents are encouraged to have their say on the recently released Kennedy’s Farm Sports Park and Community Precinct Revised Draft Concept Plan.

Redland City Council’s latest round of community engagement aims to progress the development of the site of the old Kennedy’s avocado farm on Russell Island. The 4.7 hectare property was acquired by Council for the purpose of developing sports and recreation facilities for the SMBI community.

Council is asking for public comment on the draft concept plan, revised following community input, until 6 August 2010.

Redlands Mayor Melva Hobson said this was the next stage in getting this exciting project developed and implemented.

“So far, feedback from the community has been very helpful in identifying the needs and wants of the residents of Russell Island in regards to the old Kennedy’s Farm.

“Through their involvement, the fundamental elements of the sports park and community precinct have taken shape on the draft concept plan,” Cr Hobson said.

These elements include vegetated and open spaces for recreation and picnics, a community garden, children’s play spaces, walking, cycling and fitness trails, tennis and multi-use courts.

Council is also calling for expressions of interest (EOI) for community representatives to sit on a voluntary committee to guide the use of the farmhouse, which will become an indoor community space.

The closing date for submitting an EOI to Council is also 6 August 2010.

Cr Barbara Townsend said the Russell Island community was very interested in the development of the proposed Kennedy’s Farm Sports Park and Community Precinct, and that it would benefit current and future generations of island residents.

“The site presents a great opportunity to create much-needed sport, recreation and community facilities and we hope it will be an example of sustainable community-focused planning as well as a showcase for community involvement and participation.

“With Federal government assistance work has already been completed on the farmhouse refurbishment, and an enthusiastic group of residents are now planning the community garden. The project is at a very exciting phase.

“Council hopes the community will comment on the draft concept plan, and express their interest in further involvement, as we look to progress the staged development of a wonderful new facility for the SMBI community,” Cr Townsend said.

Stakeholders and residents in the immediate vicinity of the site will receive a copy of the draft concept plan newsletter, and information will be displayed at shops and ferry terminals.
