Residents of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands will get another opportunity to have a say on one of the Redlands’ most important and exciting projects.

Redland City Council and Economic Development Queensland will host a new round of community forums to discuss the proposed rejuvenation of the Weinam Creek transport centre.

The proposed development scheme for this Priority Development Area - based on ideas from the community, technical studies and investor interest - will be released for public consultation from 10 January to 24 February 2014.

Island residents are urged to have their say on the proposed scheme and what they would like to see at the Redland Bay gateway to the Southern Moreton Bay islands at community forums, to be held on:

• Thursday 30 January 2014, from 5pm-8pm at Redland Bay Community Hall, Redland Bay.

• Thursday 6 February 2014, from 5pm-8pm at Macleay Progress Hall, Macleay Island.

Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards, who represents the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and Redland Bay, urged Islanders to get involved with a project he said would significantly redefine their key link to the mainland.

“The Weinam Creek project will deliver the residential, transport and entertainment services that Islanders and Redland Bay residents have been awaiting for years,” Cr Edwards said.

“It will open the door to the Southern Moreton Bay Islands and help to see the area’s massive economic and tourism potential is realised.

Residents views are vital and this latest round of community forums will be another great opportunity for those most affected to hear how this important project is progressing and to offer views on what should be happening.

The development scheme for Weinam Creek will be finalised by June next year.

Possible suggestions for the busy transport hub include improved parking and traffic control, “drop in’’ facilities for cruising boaties, shopping and dining precincts, an adjacent health hub and an artificial beach.

Island residents who cannot make it to the forum can still have their say by completing an online survey which will be available at www.redland.qld.gov.au during the public consultation phase from 10 January.
