Parking Increased At Weinam Creek Ferry Terminal

Residents parking at the Weinam Creek ferry terminal now have an extra 100 car parks available after Redland City Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads constructed a new $150,000 parking area.

Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards said Council had moved quickly to build the new car park after a State Government project had impacted parking at the popular ferry terminal.

The Weinam Creek ferry terminal is a busy area at the best of times, but with the Department of Transport and Main Roads building a bus terminal on site it has become even more crowded, he said.

While this is not a Council project, we have received quite a few phone calls from residents concerned about the loss of car parking and general pedestrian safety and we have lobbied the department to make the necessary improvements to the site.

The construction of these new parking bays on an old spoil site is an example of Council and the State Government working together to respond to community concern.

Cr Edwards said Council had been working with the Department of Transport and Main Roads to improve vehicle and pedestrian access at the site of their new bus terminal project.

The reality is projects do result in a temporary inconvenience, including in this case the temporary removal of a small number of car parks to make way for construction equipment, he said.

Despite this, I am pleased to say that this new stage two spoil-pond parking area, combined with stage one installed earlier in the project, means there will now be about 60 more car parks than there were originally.

I would like to thank the department for responding to our request. Council is also working with them to further improve the site by installing additional shelter, seating and signage. 

Cr Edwards called on the community to think and act safely when using the busy ferry terminal.

We have received reports of people parking illegally, including in emergency services parking bays, which is very concerning, he said.

With this new parking area now available, there is no reason for this sort of behaviour and I ask the community to please be patient and exercise caution during the construction of this State Government project.

The new multi-million dollar bus terminal is a Department of Transport and Main Roads project and will include a new and improved transport facility to cater for future demand including improved shelter, toilet facilities and space for both a kiosk and coffee shop. 

Construction is expected to be completed in early 2017
