Parking and alternative barge routes strong themes at island transport SpeakOut
23 March 2010
Feedback gathered from around 500 Southern Moreton Bay Islanders on transport issues is continuing to be compiled and analysed, following Redland City Council’s SpeakOut event on Macleay Island on 13 March.
The SpeakOut was part of the comprehensive research and community engagement activities being undertaken in the review of the Southern Moreton Bay Island (SMBI) Integrated Local Transport Plan (ILTP) review.
The event provided information about the ILTP review process and gave an opportunity for islanders to discuss and prioritise the key issues relating to transport on and between the islands and mainland. It was attended by Mayor Melva Hobson, Division 5 Councillor Barbara Townsend, Council CEO Gary Stevenson, Council planners, consultants GHD and Translink representatives.
When asked to nominate where they would like to see infrastructure funds spent, participants overwhelmingly indicated they preferred investment in parking at Weinam Creek. There was also strong interest in alternative barge routes.
The two-hour session featured interactive displays, entertainment, and a chance for locals to chat with Council and Translink staff about the review.
It was the first in a series of opportunities for the SMBI communities to have input into the ILTP, which will provide strategic direction for addressing local transport issues.
Redland City Mayor, Melva Hobson, said the aim of the SpeakOut was for Council to listen to islanders.
“The day was a great success, in that hundreds of people came along and participated in the activities and shared their views,” Cr Hobson said.
“Locals offered innovative transport solutions for consideration in the review, including ride-sharing programs and footpaths on the islands able to accommodate mobility scooters.
“Participants also emphasised the need to promote the islands’ unique natural environment as a way to attract greater numbers of tourists and boost island economies.
“The important thing now is for Council to follow up and demonstrate how this information is being used as part of the ILTP review.”
Division 5 Councillor Barbara Townsend said the participants’ preference for parking solutions at Weinam Creek confirmed Council’s view that it was a critical issue for the islands.
“People also told me on the day they were keen to see solutions for public transport on the islands to alleviate parking pressures close to home,” Cr Townsend said.
“It was great to see so many islanders participate in such a positive way and provide feedback on all aspects of travel. I hope locals continue with this approach, as it’s the best way to ensure the review process delivers outcomes that reflect community needs and expectations.”
The next step in the review will be the release of the discussion paper, and a travel survey.
