Cobby Cobby Island Cleanup Day

Cobby Cobby Island Cleanup Day
Cobby Cobby Island Cleanup Day Sunday 20th September 2015
Cobby Cobby Island is a National Park in the Southern Moreton Bay region, immediately to the south of Russell Island.

A good description of Cobby Cobby can be found in the summer 2007 edition of Upstream Paddle magazine.

It is one of our most neglected parks and the Southern Moreton Bay Islands (SMBI) Coastcare Group is planning a long-term restoration of the island, starting with a litter cleanup under the auspices of Cleanup Australia.

We plan to clean up the bottle midden and the shoreline. Shoreline litter will be collected in bags and either brought back to the onsite location (see below) or, for those in kayaks, left above high tide mark for later retrieval.
For participants wishing to arrive by watercraft, the onsite location is the remains of the crabber’s hut on the south-west corner of the island. Sign-on will be at this location.

The co-ordinates are 27deg 43min 46sec south 153deg 23min 14sec east.
For participants wishing to arrive by land, the procedure is -
Park at the Redland Bay ferry terminal at Weinam Creek (there is an overflow carpark in Meissner St, 20 minutes walk away - see map below).
Catch the 9:00 ferry via the island group or 9:30 ferry direct to Russell Island.

Transport (private car) provided to Sandy Beach or Rocky Point (depending on wind direction) at the southern end of the island, with sign-on at this location; then private boat transfer from there to Cobby Cobby.

This transfer will be from a beach at low tide, so water-friendly footwear is the go.

Because of the remoteness of the location, the cleanup day is not open to children under 12 years of age, or adults over 70 years of age.

Children under 16 years of age need to have consent to participate and be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian as per Cleanup Australia guidelines.

You will need to bring water, food, hat, sunscreen, repellent and wear enclosed shoes and suitable clothing.

Gloves will be available, but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.
To attend the cleanup, you must register with Cleanup Australia
If you are coming by land, please leave your name and arrival details as a comment below, or send an email to the address listed on the Cleanup Australia link above.

This will assist greatly with transport logistics.
