Council Set To Market Test Demand For Industrial Land On Macleay Island

Redland City Council will soon invite Expressions of Interest for the private, commercial use of industrial land on Macleay Island.

Mayor Karen Williams said the northern portion of the Council-owned land at 20-24 Kate Street, Macleay Island was surplus to Council's operational requirements and was zoned for low impact industrial development.

Releasing the industrial zoned area for private use will encourage island-based industry, helping to boost the Southern Moreton Bay Islands economy, Cr Williams said.

Council is confident the private sector will embrace this opportunity, opening the door for future industry and economic growth on the island.

This could also potentially facilitate the relocation of industry from residential areas on the islands.

The land is also fringed with vegetation, which will help reduce impacts on surrounding areas.

Division 5 Councillor Mark Edwards said the EOI process followed a Council resolution in July 2019 to market test demand for private use of industrial land on the island.

Our islands are a great place to live and Council also wants them to be a great place to work; and potentially opening up this land to light industrial uses will help grow the local economy, Cr Edwards said.

The first step will be to test the market through an EOI to see what is possible before we allocate funds to make the necessary land available.

Further details will be available on Council's website when the EOI is released in the new year.
