Supa IGA Opening Day
The official opening of the new Cornetts Supa IGA on Saturday, 2 August 2008, was a sight long awaited by the residents of Russell Island and the surrounding Bay Islands. Visitors to the new 
shopping complex, located on High Street, Russell Island enjoyed a free sausage sizzle, compliments of Cornetts Supa IGA and the local butcher, Bay Island Meats. The official opening ceremony was attended by local council, state and federal members, owner of Cornetts Supa IGA, Derek Cornett and representatives of Canipa Developments Ian Larkman and Todd Reinke as well as local residents and island visitors.
Stores located in the new complex include a butcher and hairdresser, with a bakery, newsagency and seafood market all to open in the coming weeks.
With such a variety of shops on the island, bay island residents will now be able to do their weekly shopping at mainland prices without having to actually travel to the mainland.
This new shopping complex has offered fantastic employment opportunities to local residents, a trend which is set to continue with future Island developments.
Up until now, infrastructure of this scale has been lacking on the islands, and this, including other projects currently in the pipeline, will ensure the Island’s future viability and continue to make it a great place to live.
